Time is a lie, which is why when your character wakes up, there are flyers from under their door and on the bulletin boards announcing the New Year's Eve Celebration tonight. The hotel is decked out for the celebration too, in golds and silvers. However, whenever you question the staff about the year we're going into, you never get a solid answer. All they'll say is that they hope you'll enjoy the celebration tonight.

I. BONFIRE NIGHTS
There's a bonfire currently roaring, with singing and dancing, teenage boys and girls in Viking-inspired costumes (yes, even for the New Year!), and of course, free-flowing booze and lots of good food. The mead is particularly popular, for it's not only really delicious, it's also extremely potent, able to get even the broodiest of brooders loosening up and those normally unaffected by alcohol inebriated.

The bonfire won't just die at Midnight - it'll continue burning long through the night until the last person around it finally heads back to their room. Though if you're around the bonfire as the clock strikes Midnight, there'll be a large crack and lots of fire sparks lifting up into the sky like fireflies that spread out. Don't worry though, they don't seem to come down, and it's almost like this is their fireworks show!

II. POOL PARTY FUN
It's not just outside, where it is snowy and cold if you're not near the bonfire that's celebratory. The Pool Area is decked out for the celebration as well. With pool floaties that look like little time watches, like father time's clock, to lazy about in. Just like outside, the mead and food are on tables against one corner of the room so feel free to stay inside and enjoy the warm and water instead as you ring in the new year.

At Midnight, while the fire is giving off its own spark firework-eques show, the pool room lights dim and the lights in the pool will do a quick light show over the first five minutes of the New Year. So definitely float on and enjoy the show!

III. WILDCARD
Want to skip the loudness of the festivities, you're more than welcome to find your own fun in the hotel, quiet or loud. Over all, the spirit is festive, the gods are quiet, and people are just enjoying themselves. So have fun however you'd like to ring in the new year!

This page is a work in progress. Feel free to ask your questions below, though!

▷ WHAT'S THIS GAME ABOUT?
Hotel Fen is a sandbox inspired by the novel of the same name, in which characters find themselves trapped in the hotel and they'll have to survive its horrors and get out. The hotel is a remote resort in the Scandinavian Mountains, a four-hour drive from the city of Oslo in Norway. It's a luxury hotel with a vintage feel and a Norse mythology theme, and it's a popular place for long vacations and for those who simply want to get away from the world for a while.

▷ WAIT, WE HAVE TO READ A BOOK?
Not at all! Characters are trapped in a magical Norse-themed hotel that's out to kill them. That's really just it.

▷ SO WHEN YOU SAY SANDBOX...
This whole thing started as a PSL idea, then we decided to try having a group PSL with some friends, then with some encouragement after the attempt stalled and fell off, we've opened it up for everyone else. We're still hoping to keep up the lowkey way of doing things, though, hence why there's no AC and no complex app process and we'll take basically everyone. We just want to be able to chill with other people and write something that adheres to an overarching plot even if we're slow and challenged with real life, okay.

▷ IS THERE A CAST OR PLAYER CAP?
Maximum of 3 characters per player, and the hotel layout sets up a natural cap of 50 since there are five floors with ten rooms each. While we're not imposing a cast cap per canon, please just keep in mind that we'd like to avoid certain groups (especially canonmates) dominating the place and/or the story, or cliques forming up in a manner that isolates the rest of the playerbase, and, well, in this hotel we like crosscanon. This is a jamjar setting, after all.

▷ HOW LONG WILL THIS GAME BE RUNNING?
We honestly don't know, though we're estimating a year OOCly at least, since this is the place where (most of) the slowpokes go. There's an overarching plot and we'll be pacing it, but we know characters can be surprising. (Like, if the hotel is destroyed on the first month because the guests can't get along...)

OOC NOTES AND UPDATES
  • The character masterlist has been updated! There's been some swings to the HV rankings, so please do check them out. 😎
    • We're still working on updating the taken list, so please refer to the spreadsheet in the meantime!
  • Sign ups are once again open! We currently have 12 slots. This month all new arrivals will wake up in the hotel, however, they will remember having arrived previously according to the arrival option selected. Who's going to believe them though, when they were in their rooms that morning of November 13, 2016? HMMM.
  • The gift shop will no longer sell the Viking-themed items that were up for grabs for those who participated in the TDM. Those who still haven't used their vouchers, however, can still use those at the gift shop, and we'll leave it up to you to decide which items are now available (it's Christmastime!) and how much they're priced.
  • Kazie will now resume responding to the Hoarr threads, as the information gleaned might be useful to the characters in the coming months. So feel free to go back to the previous log and tag that. With this month's log taking place in an entirely different time, who really knows if that conversation happened... 😏
  • We sincerely apologize for the laser tag event falling through and for the inconvenience and confusion it has caused everyone. We thought that it would be something new and fun to try, but then life happened and we were not there to facilitate and get it moving. Again, we're really sorry.
    • Speaking of laser tag, we've decided to use the OOC plotting posts to determine the winners, factoring in the injuries and the "participation." So the winner is Team Vidar, followed by Team Tyr, Team Hodr, Team Thor, and, very far behind in terms of points, Team Baldr. (No, this is not foreboding at all.)
  • For questions, please ask them here! We can still be reached via Plurk and Discord, though mostly just Lizzy, so we'd prefer having the questions on this post for everyone's visibility. Also, for that same reason, we're not putting up an OOC post this round, but please feel free to post plotting comments under this toplevel.
  • Lastly, we just want to say THANK YOU to everyone for staying with us despite how horrible we've been in the past weeks. We'll make it up to you and do our best to still give you a fun RP experience. 💖

▷ WELCOME
We are officially open! Thank you so much everyone, you've all been incredible so far! ♥
  • Here's a handy spreadsheet with (hopefully) all the pertinent info in one place!
    • If we made an oopsie regarding your character, please just let us know.
  • Voucher redemptions are extended until the end of October. The change to your characters' HV from their purchases (as well as their debts) will be reflected when we roll into November.
  • Our TDM will continue to be open all month, and now you know why. So go on, let your characters make some friends... and then worry when they disappear.
    • Or die. They could die too.
  • The CR meme is also still open, but you might rather use this new post for plotting specific to this month's shenanigans.
  • Housekeeping offers still stand: taken list icon swapping, canon name updating for OCs, etc.

the network hub —
the catchall post for all your messaging needs!

  • There is no cell reception in the vicinity of the hotel. At all. No matter what the characters do or try, nada.
  • Each of the rooms have vintage telephones similar to the above, but they can only call other rooms, the front desk and the restaurant.
  • The business center next to the gym on the first floor has several computers for guests to use. They seem like they're connecting to the internet well enough, if not just a little slow. However, guests will never actually receive emails from anyone in the outside world that are not just your general spam. Like their friends and family haven't sent them anything while they're on vacation. And unbeknownst to them, their emails out will not actually reach their destination.
  • Is there a sat phone somewhere, though? Maybeeeeee.

It had taken some convincing for the driver to agree to go this far; three had turned him down stating that the drive was too long and not worth their time. He’d also caught the grumble under one breath that, if his Norwegian was correct, called the place haunted.

Staring at it through the window, Victor could see why. The hotel itself stood stark and tall against a small crest of mountains set back off the road. No other buildings marred the picturesque look of the destination spot, though a small, dark forest of trees lined the dirt road leading to the hotel. With the gray clouds that had started to gather and the light snowfall that had already started, it gave the appearance and impression that he might actually be entering a horror movie. All it was missing was a sign on an arch that read ‘Lost Souls Beyond This Point’ or something equally as cheesy, to make the scene.

PREMISE
Hotel Fen is a remote resort in the Scandinavian Mountains, a four-hour drive from the city of Oslo in Norway. It's a luxury hotel with a vintage feel and a Norse mythology theme, and it's a popular place for long vacations and for those who simply want to get away from the world for a while.

The sandbox is inspired by the novel of the same name, and the premise is simple: characters find themselves trapped in the hotel, and they'll have to survive its horrors and get out.

ARRIVAL OPTIONS
Characters can arrive in any of the following ways:

  • VOLUNTARY - THE TOURIST OPTION
  • For characters who can afford it! Meaning they actually book a vacation in this place; the minimum package is for seven nights. These characters will arrive by car or cab or private carriage anytime during the story. But wait... carriage? Horse-drawn carriages? Why not? The hotel's super old, who's to say it hasn't existed in those characters' time?

  • MYSTERIOUS - THE LUCKY WINNER OPTION
  • These characters somehow wind up with a free vacation from a mysterious benefactor. They win a contest they don't remember entering, inherit an all-expense paid trip from a random deceased person, end up going in someone else's place, etc. They will arrive all together via bus at the start of the story, but they could've gone to the rendezvous point in Oslo or they were picked up along the way.

  • ACCIDENTAL - THE NARNIA OPTION
  • What it says. Your character walks through a door, falls into the sea, crash-lands into a forest, gets teleported to a wrong location... whatever the case, these characters will arrive somewhere outside the hotel (but within the vicinity) in mod-assigned locations and timing. Please note that these characters will arrive with everyone else they're with at that moment, so yes you can arrive as a group, and yes you can arrive with pets and small children, but no please don't take an entire train of NPCs with you?

  • UNKNOWN - THE AFTERLIFE OPTION
  • For characters who are taken from their deaths. They wake up in a room of their own at the beginning of the story, and they have no recollection of who they are and how they died. What they do know is that they've been staying in the hotel for quite sometime now, enjoying its luxuries and just living their best lives! (Powers, if any, will remain, though they might have to be nerfed to keep from breaking the game. Memories will have to be regained during the course of the story and there will be ample opportunities to do so.)

  • WILDCARD - THE MOD-DESIGNATED OPTION
  • For those who can't decide, or just want an adventure! This doesn't mean, however, that your character will have a bigger role to play in the metaplot. But if you want the extra challenge of working out what you're given, this is the option for you.
